Exploring the Mystery of Tinplate
Among the large family of packaging materials, tinplate occupies an important position due to its unique charm. Today, let us walk into the world of tinplate and unveil its mysterious veil.
What exactly is tinplate?
Tinplate, scientifically known as electroplated tinplate (SPTE), is made by coating both sides of cold-rolled low-carbon steel sheets or strips with a layer of commercially pure tin. Simply put, it's like giving the iron a protective coat of tin.
Origin Story
Tinplate originated in Bohemia (present-day Czech Republic and Slovakia), a region rich in metals and advanced in craftsmanship. Tinplate production began in the 14th century, and by 1810, the world's first tinplate can was invented by a British man. Through continuous development, tinplate is now widely used worldwide. Some theories suggest that the name originated from the tinplate used to make cans at the time, imported from Macao (pronounced "Ma Kou" in English), or from its use in kerosene lamp holders shaped like a horse's mouth. Although the China Tinplate Conference officially renamed it "tinplate" in 1973, the name "tinplate" remains widely used.
2. Features Revealed
1. Corrosion Resistance
The tin layer acts like a loyal guardian, blocking the intrusion of oxygen and moisture, significantly slowing the onset of rust. Just like a tinplate can on the beach, it can withstand the erosion of the damp sea breeze for a long time.
2. Non-toxic and Safe
Whether used for food or pharmaceutical packaging, tinplate does not release harmful substances, protecting our health. This is why many infant formula products are packaged in tinplate cans.
3. High Strength
Despite its thinness, tinplate possesses exceptional strength, capable of withstanding certain pressures and impacts without deforming. For example, a tinplate box filled with items can withstand bumps during transportation.
4. Good Ductility
This property allows tinplate to be processed into a variety of complex shapes to meet the packaging needs of different products. From round cans to custom-shaped gift boxes, its excellent ductility is essential.
